Buy back scheme – selling your property

Social landlords and housing associations can buy properties through the open market, or in response to enquiries from owners looking to sell their property. 

These properties will normally be ex-council, but they will also consider other properties.

This forms part of the National Acquisition Programme – Scottish Government.

Properties that will be considered

A property will be considered if it meets at least one of the following criteria:

• to resolve a homeless situation or to prevent homelessness
• there is demand for the type and size of property in that area
• the combined cost of buying and bringing it up to letting standards would represent value for money

Properties where tenants must leave to allow a sale cannot be considered.

Properties that will be considered include:

• properties that are on or off the open market and have vacant possession
• properties where an owner occupier cannot afford the required maintenance or refurbishment of their home and therefore wishes to sell and remain in the home as a tenant in the social rented sector
• newly completed properties where developers are selling them 'off the shelf' for a fixed price
• properties where landlords are leaving the private rented sector with a tenant in situ – this must meet a clear strategic purpose and where the tenant is at risk of homelessness

• if the property is occupied by a tenant
• if your property is on the market and include a link to the property listing
