How to vote in an election or referendum, including how to vote in person, by post and by proxy, voter ID and polling stations.

Vote in person

We'll send you a polling card if you are registered and eligible to vote in an election or referendum. 

You should receive your polling card 3 to 4 weeks before the election or referendum. Let us know if you think you're registered but do not receive a polling card.

A polling place is a building or area in which a polling station is located. 

A polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place. 

You're allocated a polling station based on where you live. You can only vote at the polling station you are allocated to. This may not always be the one nearest to you.

Voter ID

You need to show photo ID to vote at a polling station in a:

  • UK Parliamentary general election
  • UK Parliamentary by-election
  • UK Parliamentary recall petition

You do not need to show photo ID to vote at a polling station in a:

  • Scottish Parliamentary election
  • local council election
