Members of the Scottish Parliament

MSPs are Members of the Scottish Parliament. Each region of Scotland is represented by a number of MSPs.

MSPS are elected to serve a 5-year term. The last election was in 2021. The next election is due to be in May 2026.

Constituency MSPs

Our region is represented by 2 elected constituency MSPs.

Dumfriesshire

The MSP for Dumfriesshire is Oliver Mundell MSP – the Scottish Parliament (Scottish Conservative and Unionist).

Galloway and West Dumfries 

The MSP for Galloway and West Dumfries is Finlay Carson MSP – the Scottish Parliament (Scottish Conservative and Unionist).

What MSPs do

MSPs take part in examining and passing Bills (proposed laws). They represent you in the Scottish Parliament and your local area and they examine the work of the Scottish Government.

They deal with matters such as:

  • agriculture
  • economic development
  • education
  • health
  • housing
  • law and order
  • sport and the arts
  • tourism
  • transport
