Smoke control areas

There are several smoke control areas in Dumfries where you must only burn authorised fuels, including anthracite and gas.

If you live in a smoke control area there are restrictions on the fuels you can use in:

  • a solid-fuel stove
  • a wood-burning stove
  • an open fireplace

Find out if you are in a smoke control area

  1. Visit Spatialhub
  2. Select 'Smoke Control Areas' from the Layers tab menu, top left of the page.
  3. Select 'Dumfries and Galloway' from the 'All Scotland' menu, top right of the page.
  4. Smoke control areas are highlighted in dark grey.

Exempt appliances

Some appliances are exempt from the smoke control area rules. This means you may be able to use other fuels if the manufacturer recommends a specific fuel.

Bonfires

You can have a bonfire in a smoke control area but follow the bonfire guidance.

Smoke nuisance

Consider the design and positioning of flues and chimneys to avoid causing smoke nuisance for your neighbours. You should do this even if you do not live in a smoke control area or not.

You may need planning permission or a building warrant for your flue or chimney, depending on the design and positioning.
