When you vote in a council election, you are voting for councillors to represent you in your ward.

Ward 1 – Stranraer and the Rhins  

Stranraer and the Rhins has an electorate of 11,615. 

The main towns and villages are Cairnryan, Drummore, Kirkcolm, Leswalt, Portpatrick, Stranraer and Sandhead.

Ward 2 – Mid Galloway and Wigtown West  

Mid Galloway and Wigtown West has an electorate of 10,521. 

The main towns and villages are Castle Kennedy, Creetown, Dunragit, Garlieston, Glenluce, Glentrool, Isle of Whithorn, Kirkcowan, Kirkinner and Braehead, New Luce, Newton Stewart and Minnigaff, Port William, Sorbie, Whauphill, The Royal Burgh of Whithorn and The Royal Burgh of Wigtown.

Ward 3 – Dee and Glenkens

Dee and Glenkens has an electorate of 8,039. 

The main towns and villages are Auchencairn, Carsphairn, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright, New Galloway and St John's Town of Dalry.

Ward 4 – Castle Douglas and Crocketford

Castle Douglas and Crocketford has an electorate of 7,467. 

The main towns and villages are Castle Douglas, Crossmichael, Springholm and Palnackie.

Abbey has an electorate of 8,377. 

The main towns and villages are Dalbeattie, New Abbey, Troqueer, Cargenbridge, Southerness, Colvend, Kippford, Rockcliffe and Kirkbean.

Ward 6 – North West Dumfries

North West Dumfries lies on the west side of the River Nith in old Maxwelltown. 

It has an electorate of 14,929 which is just under half of the population of Dumfries.

Mid and Upper Nithsdale has an electorate of 8,124. 

The main towns and villages are Kirkconnel and Kelloholm, Sanquhar, Thornhill, Penpont and Moniaive.

Lochar has an electorate of 10,140. 

The main towns and villages are Ae, Auldgirth, Collin, Dalswinton, Heathhall and Locharbriggs, Holywood, Kirkton and Torthorwald.

Nith has an electorate of 10,461. 

The main towns and villages are Dumfries, Glencaple and Caerlaverock.

Annandale South has an electorate of 10,886. 

The main towns and villages are the Royal Burgh of Annan, Eastriggs, Dornock, Creca, Cummertrees and Cummertress West, Ruthwell, Clarencefield, Dalton and Carrutherstown.

Annandale North has an electorate of 11,486. 

The main towns and villages are Johnstonebridge, Lochmaben, Lockerbie and Moffat.
