Report an out of control dog

A dog is out of control if it its behaviour causes alarm or fear for others.

You can report it by:

To investigate your report it will help if you can tell us some things about the dog:

  • where it is
  • the size and colour
  • the breed or type
  • if it has a collar

If the dog is causing an immediate threat to someone, call the police on 999.

After your report

Our animal health and welfare officers may give the owner a dog control notice that lists what they have to do to keep their dog under control.

A dog control notice will list a variety of things the owner must do, for example:

  • muzzling
  • keeping the dog on lead
  • neutering
  • attending dog training classes
  • specified walking routes and walking times
  • avoiding certain areas
  • any other steps the animal health and welfare officer says are needed

It is a criminal offence to fail to comply with a dog control notice.
