How we provide social care services and support
Social care is the name given to support or services that help people over the age of 16 years to live as independently as possible.
This support may be for:
- a short period of time – for example to help someone regain skills and confidence following an illness or accident
- a longer period of time
Support will be provided in different ways, depending on what suits each person.

Self-directed support
Social care in Scotland is delivered under self-directed support legislation. Self-directed support gives everyone assessed as eligible for social care more control, choice and flexibility over how their care and support is arranged.
